Is unsightly sweat keeping you from enjoying your favorite clothing or social gatherings with confidence? Underarm sweating can result in embarrassing wetness and odor, as well as rashes or irritation. Additionally, for many, combating sweating with deodorant may leave white antiperspirant stains on clothes, impacting self-esteem. Patients may be hesitant to wear their favorite outfits for fear of unattractive stains caused by both underarm sweat and excessive use of deodorant. Moreover, excessive sweating can result in unwanted stress, leading to further perspiration.
However, did you know there is a long-term solution to underarm sweating? Introducing miraDry®: the first FDA-approved treatment to eliminate the burdensome effects of armpit sweating, as well as the need for deodorant. Here at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, our New York dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, is proud to offer this non-surgical procedure for those looking to say goodbye to underarm sweat and antiperspirant.
How MiraDry® Works:
MiraDry® is specially designed to eliminate excess sweat glands under the arms that cause perspiration. The miraDry® system uses focused miraWave™ energy to gradually destroy sweat glands during treatment. First, the miraDry® hand-piece is applied to the skin and uses suctioning to position perspiration glands closer to the skin’s surface. Once sweat glands are optimally positioned, the miraDry® system sends waves of concentrated energy to the armpit area, while simultaneously providing a cooling sensation to minimize pain or discomfort. As sweat glands are exposed to the miraWave™ energy, they are gradually eliminated.
Why Undergo MiraDry® Treatment?
MiraDry® can effectively destroy both eccrine glands (perspiration-causing glands) and apocrine glands (odor-causing glands)—making miraDry® an ideal procedure for patients suffering from sweat stains and/or odor. After undergoing miraDry® treatment, patients no longer need to apply deodorant! Additionally, miraDry® can remove troublesome armpit hair, as hair follicles are also targeted during the procedure.
How Long Does MiraDry® Last?
MiraDry® is shown to provide long-lasting sweat relief because excess sweat glands are permanently removed during the procedure. However, individual results vary by patient. Dr. Levine will discuss your specific goals to create an ideal treatment schedule that will yield optimal results.

With winter around the corner, it’s time to cover up. As the arctic air and blowing snow arrives, people take refuge in layers of thermals and heavy coats to protect themselves from the winter chill. This may be a perfect opportunity for those considering a body sculpting procedure. The winter months allow for ample time to recover from liposuction before the summer arrives! But how do you know which form of liposuction is right for you? Below are some of the liposuction methods we utilize here at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC. These liposuction options can treat a variety of areas, including the abdomen, hips, thighs, arms, and more!
Tumescent Liposuction and Super Wet Liposuction
When undergoing tumescent liposuction, a solution is injected into the treatment area to reduce patient discomfort and to prepare the area for fat removal. Upon injection, the targeted area becomes firm and makes fat cells easier and safer to suction. Cannulas are then inserted to begin gently removing fat from the area, often without the need for general anesthesia. Those looking to selectively target areas of fat can do so with tumescent liposuction.
Super wet liposuction is similar to tumescent liposuction in that it uses a specialized solution to treat the target area. However, super wet liposuction uses a smaller volume injected than the tumescent liposuction technique (approximately half the amount of solution).
Power Assisted Liposuction
Power assisted liposuction (PAL) uses a specialized electric device to create an oscillating cannula so that fat can be easily suctioned. This is very effective when treating larger areas.
SmartLipo® is an advanced liposuction technique utilizing laser technology to remove stubborn pockets of fat while promoting skin tightening. SmartLipo® is ideal for targeting smaller concentrations of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. The SmartLipo® laser can liquefy fat before being suctioned out. Additionally, the laser’s heat stimulates collagen growth to reinforce skin structure and produce a tightening effect.
VASER® LipoSelection uses ultrasound technology to precisely target localized areas of fat. VASER® LipoSelection sends ultrasound energy to the affected area, making it easier to remove fat. Like SmartLipo®, VASER® LipoSelection also yields skin tightening results in the months following your VASER® procedure.
These liposuction techniques can be combined in order to achieve optimal results! Additionally, liposuction may be utilized alongside both surgical and non-surgical body sculpting or facial rejuvenation procedures to meet the needs of each patient.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women, and approximately one in eight women will be affected over the course of their lives. Additionally, thousands of men develop breast cancer each year. Breast Cancer Awareness Month not only reminds us of those who have been diagnosed and have fought breast cancer so bravely, but it also raises awareness about options following surgery that many women may not realize are available. The decision to undergo breast reconstruction after breast cancer is an important decision in the recovery process for many survivors. There are numerous questions that need to be considered when undergoing a breast reconstruction procedure post-mastectomy to determine the best option for you.
What Are My Options?
Patients can choose from three types of breast implants: silicone gel implants, saline implants, and gummy implants. All three of these options come in different implant shapes for natural-looking results, including round and teardrop-shaped implants. A tissue expander is used to slowly stretch the skin and muscle in order to create a pocket in which to place your breast implant.
Tissue Flap Surgery
Tissue flap surgery utilizes skin, muscle, and fat from your body to produce a more natural-looking appearance. Tissue flaps can be taken from a variety of areas, including the back and abdomen. While the tissue flap method can produce more realistic-looking results, it is important to know that these procedures are more invasive—requiring more downtime after surgery.
Autologous fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is another breast reconstruction procedure that harvests fat cells from other parts of your body to recreate a breast. This fat is carefully collected to ensure survival during the transfer. Once processed, these cells are injected into the breast area.
What Results Can I Expect?
All three of these procedures can produce natural-looking results and help restore the appearance of breasts. Depending on the procedure, it may take weeks, or even months, for your final results to take shape. Once they are achieved, however, they are long-lasting.
Breast plastic surgeon Dr. Elie Levine will sit down and discuss each breast reconstruction option with you in order to create a treatment plan to achieve natural-looking results that fit your goals and desires.

The summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean the sultry sun failed to leave its mark. Symptoms of sun damage, such as redness and uneven pigmentation, are often undesirable after-effects of a summer well spent. Though the face is most equated with sun damage, your entire body is prone to the effects of ultraviolet rays. Repeated exposure to the sun can break down collagen—causing fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC offers different laser and light-based therapies that are designed to improve skin tone and keep skin looking rejuvenated!
Laser skin resurfacing treats sun damage with revolutionary laser technology! Utilizing the PicoSure® Laser, this procedure delivers precise bursts of energy to the affected area without damaging surrounding skin cells. The PicoSure® Laser resurfaces your skin, allowing fresh skin cells to grow—improving skin texture and pigmentation. The laser’s energy also stimulates collagen production below the surface of your skin; this new collagen provides firmness and elasticity to round out your smooth new look. Laser skin resurfacing can be performed on multiple areas of the body as well, including the face, chest, arms, hands, and legs, among others.
Light therapies can also be utilized to treat the medical effects of sun damage—and not only the cosmetic effects. Photodynamic therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses a photosensitizing topical medication and a light to target certain skin cells that show signs of damage. First, a photosensitizing solution is applied to the area of uneven pigmentation. The solution is absorbed by damaged skin cells being targeted. The area is then exposed to light, which activates the photosensitizing solution and destroys the precancerous or cancerous sun-damaged cells. The majority of patients require 1 treatment, with annual touch-ups as needed. Patients are required to avoid sun exposure for 48 hours after undergoing photodynamic therapy.
BroadBand Light photorejuvenation (BBL) delivers powerful pulses of broadband light energy to sun-damaged skin. This energy breaks up excess pigments to create smooth, even skin tone. Additionally, heat pulses from BBL photorejuvenation encourage normal collagen production for continuing results in the months following BBL treatment.
NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and the staff at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC welcome any questions you may have about laser skin resurfacing, photodynamic therapy, and BBL photorejuvenation, as well as our other sun damage treatments. The double chin is a cosmetic concern for many patients. Due to a variety of possible causes, including obesity, age, and genetics, this area is especially prone to the buildup of excess fat cells below the chin—known as “submental fat.” The presence of fat along the neck and jawline can result in an older, heavier appearance and may be resistant to diet and exercise. However, thanks to the latest advancements in cosmetic treatments, there is a new, non-invasive solution for submental fat. Kybella is the first FDA-approved injectable to reduce submental fat causing the appearance of a double chin!
Kybella is made from deoxycholic acid—a substance found naturally in the body that helps with the absorption of fat cells. Once injected, Kybella begins breaking down submental fat cells so that the body can better absorb them. These fat cells are then permanently removed from your system, ensuring long-lasting definition and youthful contours!
Kybella is the first non-invasive treatment for double chins, meaning there is no need for surgery or anesthesia, which results in no scarring. Individual treatments last roughly 15-20 minutes, while a series of 2-6 injections spread out over time is recommended in order to produce the best results. Patients can return to their daily routines immediately following Kybella treatment. Results can begin to be seen up to a month after treatment, while mild side effects, such as redness or bruising, should subside after a few weeks.
Kybella treatment is ideal for patients who have a moderate amount of submental fullness. Those with larger amounts of submental fat may need to reduce excess fat through diet and exercise; these patients may also benefit from alternatives, such as submental liposuction, SmartLipo, or VASER® LipoSelection, among others.
NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and the staff at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC welcome any questions you may have about Kybella, as well as our other non-surgical treatments!
