Cheek Implants – Malar Augmentation

High, well-defined cheeks are expressive as they highlight your eyes, accentuate your smile and help define balance to the rest of your face.  Just the opposite are sunken cheeks which make your face look flat and without expression.  Under developed cheeks can make your nose and jaw look out of proportion and cause your eyes to look hollow.  If your cheeks aren’t high and well proportioned – you may always look tired.  Well proportioned cheeks are a sign of beauty which diminishes as part of the normal aging process.  Cheek Implants can restore that natural looking beauty and youthfulness while taking years off your mid-face.  Dr. Levine can perform this age-erasing surgery in office and help restore the beauty you once enjoyed – or never had.

Your Personal Consultation
When you meet with Dr. Levine you will discuss all your concerns and goals and learn about your options.  He will examine your face to evaluate the bony and soft tissue architecture as well skin type and quality, and will discuss the importance of overall facial balance. He may recommend other procedures, such as Chin Augmentation and Neck Liposuction or Rhinoplasty, in order to help you achieve optimal results. During this appointment he will design a treatment plan that will ensure your expectations are met.

Cheek Implant Surgery Overview
After you are prepped and made totally comfortable, Dr. Levine will make incisions inside your mouth through which he will work to create pockets and carefully position your implants. The implant is easily placed into the pocket in front of the jawbone.  After completion, the incisions are closed with sutures and sterile tape strips are applied on the outside of the cheek area to help hold the implants in place.  This surgery usually takes about an hour unless it’s done in combination with other procedures.

What to Expect After Your Cheek Implant Surgery
You will experience some swelling, numbness and a feeling of “tightness” after your surgery.  Most patients complain of discomfort rather than pain.  This will easily be managed by cool compresses, a modified diet and oral pain medication as needed.  You should plan to rest for an entire day after your surgery and to sleep with your head elevated for at least one week following your surgery.  You must avoid strenuous activity such as bending, lifting, straining or driving for the first week also.  Dr. Levine will tell you when you can resume normal activity. Always protect your face from sunburn by wearing sunglasses and a hat.  Check with Dr. Levine before using a sunscreen or other cosmetic creams on the cheeks. Remember that healing occurs gradually – but the discomforts will decrease a little each day.  Most of our patients are presentable and able to return to work within 2 weeks as swelling, bruising and discomfort are nearly gone.  Your follow-up appointments are very important so that Dr. Levine can monitor your progress and so that we can enjoy your more-youthful look also!
