Early signs of aging are revealed in the eyes more than any other part of the face because this is the area of the face that people are immediately drawn towards. These changes may be due to squinting, sun damage or heredity. The lower eyelids are one of the first areas of the face to show age-related changes. Skin begins to slacken as the layers underneath the skin begin to weaken. This creates shadowy hollows, wrinkles and bags. These bags often are secondary to excess fat becoming more visibly prominent. The upper eyelid skin also loses it elasticity, resulting in a creepy appearance, with excess skin actually beginning to descend downward and resting on the eyelashes. This not only highlights dramatic aging but can even affect vision in some patients.

Eyelid Surgery Overview
Upper Eyelid surgery is performed through an incision hidden within the crease of the upper eyelid. Working through this incision, Dr. Levine will reposition or remove fat deposits, address muscle issues and remove excess skin if needed. This will create a firmer more youthful upper eyelid contour. Lower eyelid surgery can be approached in different ways depending on the patient’s anatomy and desires. One approach involves an incision inside the eye with repositioning or removal of fat as needed. This is the ideal approach for people with limited to no skin excess. A second approach involves an incision just below the lash line that is ideal for fat redistribution or removal. This option also allows for skin excess to be removed and lower eyelid position to be addresses and tightened if needed.
What to Expect After Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery typically takes one to two hours. When you wake up your eyes may be lubricated with ointment and covered with a gauze dressing. Cold compresses may be applied to help reduce swelling and minimize discomfort. You will need to sleep with your head elevated and keep it elevated at all times, care for the surgical site daily, take medications as instructed and return for your follow-up appointments. You will need to restrict most activity for a few days and then light activity will be permitted. Sun glasses should be worn to protect your eyes from bright light, sun and wind. You will need a responsible adult to drive you to and from your surgery and stay with you for a couple of days. Specific post-operative details will be discussed with the patient prior to surgery.
Most swelling or bruising resolves within five to ten days. Healing will continue for several weeks as swelling diminishes and incision lines improve. After you are ready to return to work (usually five to ten days after surgery) and resume normal activities, camouflage makeup may be worn as cover-up until the signs of surgery resolve.
