Rhinoplasty – Nose Reshaping

Because the nose is the most defining facial feature – annually over one half million people decide to have their noses reshaped or fixed.  It may be too big, too wide, too long, too narrow, bulbous at the end, have a hump in the middle, the rim is too thick, the tip hangs down, it’s crooked or the middle looks like a “ski jump” because it is caved in or crushed.  The reason may be functional thus creating breathing problems.  The problem may have existed from birth or been caused by trauma.  It doesn’t matter – Dr. Levine can create a nose that fits and compliments the other features of your face – to bring it into balance.  The goal of Rhinoplasty is to reshape the nose so that it looks natural and blends harmoniously with your other facial features, and so that it is functional if breathing problems are the reason for your surgery.  Rhinoplasty can fix a distorted, damaged nose – or it can restore a more youthful appearance to an aging nose.

Your Personal Consultation
During your personal consultation with Dr. Levine, you will discuss your concerns, goals and get all your questions answered.  He will examine your nose, inform you of your options and help you make realistic decisions. Upon request pictures will be taken and computer imaging can also be used to let you see your ideal outcome. Dr. Levine may also recommend a combination of procedures to ensure optimum results in creating true balance and facial harmony.

Rhinoplasty – Nose Reshaping Overview
After you are prepped and completely comfortable Dr. Levine will make a small incision inside your nose  (closed Rhinoplasty) or across the columella – that vertical strip which separates your nostrils.  Whether he does “open” or “closed” surgery will be determined during your personal consultation and depends on the problem involved.  Working through this incision, he will separate the skin from its supporting framework of bone and cartilage and then sculpt your nose by manipulating bone and trimming cartilage etc.  The skin is then redraped over its frame and sutured in place.  A splint is placed on your nose to protect the surgery and stabilize your nose.  Soft packs may be used inside your nose as well.  Your Rhinoplasty surgery will take from2-4 hours depending on how extensive it is.

What to Expect After Your Rhinoplasty Surgery
You can expect to have a puffy nose, a slight headache and your nose may ache after your surgery.  Any discomfort will be managed by oral pain medication prescribed by Dr.Levine. You will need to rest in bed with your head elevated for the first day after surgery.  Swelling and bruising around the eyes will increase – peak after 2-3 days then start to subside.  Cold packs will reduce the swelling and offer comfort as well.  Most of the swelling will disappear within 2-3 weeks.  Most patients are up and around within 2-3 days.  You will need to sleep with your head elevated for a few weeks until Dr. Levine tells you otherwise. You will also need to avoid lifting, straining, stooping and all strenuous activity until he releases you to return to normal activity.  Most patients are presentable and able to return to work or school after 1-2 weeks.
