Body Sculpting Post-Bariatric Surgery: A Healthier You

POSTED ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 06, 2014 AT 11:11 AM by Dr. Elie Levine

Bariatric surgery is a life changing procedure, giving patients a new lease on life, elevating your self-esteem and laying the foundation for a new, improved lifestyle. Although you may be shedding away pounds and feeling renewed, the weight loss journey is not finished. Post-bariatric surgery, pounds of excess skin may hang over your body, hindering your mobility, preventing you from losing additional weight, and often causing rashes. Clothing selection may still be limited and uncomfortable as well, despite having lost weight, because of awkward folds of hanging skin. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we stand behind your weight loss journey, offering the final surgical step to your weight loss success, body sculpting. Our plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, can design a treatment plan that suits your individual needs, getting you one step closer to your ideal body.

Post-bariatric surgery, every area of your body is affected from the dramatic weight loss. Your stomach, legs, arms, face, and chest may be effected. An array of procedures are available to correct the results of extreme weight loss, so you can enjoy a more mobile lifestyle and the quality of life that you deserve:

Sagging Skin
Your arms, back, stomach and buttocks can experience dramatic affects post weight loss. This sagging skin may cause skin irritation, chafing, and prevent clothes from fitting correctly. Our plastic surgeon removes excess skin to help contour these areas for a more sculpted you. Additionally, after extreme weight loss, your breasts may experience sagging, decreased size, loss of symmetry, and even appear “deflated.” Dr. Levine can correct your breasts with breast implants and/or a breast lift, bringing the perky positioning back to your chest.

Rubbing Thighs
Often producing some of the most dramatic results, a thigh lift takes away sagging and excess skin from the inner and outer thigh areas and gives you a much slimmer appearance. Thigh contours are improved for more form-fitting clothing.

Hanging Jowls
Sagging skin on your face and neck area adds years to your appearance. For a more youthful you, our plastic surgeon recommends tightening the skin in your neck and face area. By repositioning this skin with a facelift or necklift, your face will appearance substantially younger and refreshed! Fat transfer can also help smooth the look of hanging jowls. Less invasive than a traditional facelift, fat is taken from a donor location, such as the abdomen or thighs, and inserted throughout the face to create enhanced facial fullness.

Stubborn Fat
Even after losing hundreds of pounds, trouble areas of fat may not be conquered with diet and exercise alone. Liposuction can remove small deposits of fat to shape remaining flabby areas.

Stretch Marks
Stretch marks may still mar skin even after weight loss. Using laser skin resurfacing, a more evenly toned and textured skin can be established.

Each body sculpting procedure is custom designed to suit you and your body’s needs. Dr. Elie Levine and his staff will be happy to meet with you to discuss any questions you may have about a body lift in NYC. Please call our New York office at 212-988-1800, or request an appointment online for a personal consultation.

Tips To Prevent Skin Cancer, National Healthy Skin Month

POSTED ON THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 06, 2014 AT 10:42 AM by Dr. Jody Levine

Before gearing up for the hectic holiday season, step back and take some time for yourself and your skin. November is National Healthy Skin Month, a month dedicated to the awareness and prevention of skin diseases, including skin cancer. Skin cancer is a very common skin condition, affecting 1 in 5 Americans in their lifetime. Unfortunately, the rate of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, continues to rise. 75% of skin cancer deaths are caused by melanoma. On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. Fortunately, melanoma and other skin cancers can be treated very effectively if diagnosed early enough. Our dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, has some tips to prevent skin cancer.

What are the risk factors for skin cancer?

  • UV exposure from the sun or tanning beds
  • Increased sun exposure as a child
  • A family history of melanoma, especially for lighter skinned individuals with numerous moles, freckles, or history of severe sunburn
  • Survivors of a previous melanoma occurrence
  • Individuals with a history of non-melanoma skin cancers

How can I prevent skin cancer?

The best way to prevent skin cancer is by avoiding sunrays during their peak hours, between 10AM and 2PM. If you must be in the sun, wear a long brimmed hat, long-sleeved shirt, and sunglasses whenever possible. Additionally, apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30 SPF that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays, constantly reapplying for effectiveness. Oftentimes individuals may be unaware that snow, sand, and water reflect rays, leading to increased exposure. It is crucial to wear sunscreen even on cloudy or snowy days.

How can I check myself for skin cancer?

The most common signs of skin cancer are moles that have an irregular or poorly defined border, are asymmetric, vary in color, and are larger than 6mm. Moles that are gradually changing in size, shape or color are also a concern. Dermatologists recommend performing a self-exam to check for suspicious moles. (For detailed instructions on performing this exam, please click here to see the American Academy of Dermatology’s website.) For an extensive, professional exam, Dr. Levine offers a full body check along with mole mapping, an exam of your moles, documenting size, color, and any irregularities in high-resolution photographs. This exam is helpful to diagnose skin cancer in its early stages, providing an in-depth evaluation of moles. If you’re experiencing moles that may not be dangerous to your health, but are cosmetically displeasing, Dr. Levine offers various forms of mole removal.

Dr. Levine stresses the importance of not only performing self-exams, but also having your moles evaluated by a dermatologist. The key to defeating melanoma is early detection and treatment. Our NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, NY Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and staff at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC welcome any questions you may have about skin cancer prevention or treatment. Treat Yourself to Non-Surgical Procedures!

POSTED ON THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2014 AT 10:01 AM by Dr. Jody Levine

When considering various procedures to restore your youth, scalpels, stitches, and long recoveries are often what comes to mind. With today’s advances, however, the invasiveness and recovery associated with traditional procedures is no more! At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, our dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, offers tricks of the trade to correct signs of aging on your face, hands, and lips without any downtime. One of the most requested procedures at our practice is dermal fillers. Some may not realize it, but with the array of cosmetic injectables available, there’s a filler for almost all of your anti-aging needs, even the less common ones, such as gummy smile, smoker’s lines, and boney hands.

Gummy Smile Correction & Dimpling

Botox® Cosmetic is often referenced as an injection to relax muscles, smooth wrinkles and eliminate fine lines.  This natural, purified protein, however, can treat much more. Used by plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and dentists alike, Botox® is injected into a patient’s upper lip muscles to alleviate signs of a gummy smile.  The treatment relaxes the lips so less gum is exposed, for a more evenly distributed, beautiful smile. Another uncommon use for Botox® is the treatment of a dimpled chin.  Dimpling is usually caused by an overactive mentalis muscle. With precise injection of this filler, the muscle is relaxed and the dimple becomes less apparent.

Hands

Like Botox, cosmetic injectables, such as Belotero and Radiesse, are known for their wrinkle reduction and volumizing powers, utilizing hyaluronic acid (HA) or calcium minerals, depending on the filler.  Radiesse, specifically, uses calcium-based microspheres to replenish lost volume. This filler is highly effective for treating lost volume in the hands. Eliminating their worn, skeletal appearance, Radiesse revives the youth in your hands.

Smoker’s Line

Belotero uses a cross-linked hyaluronic acid to smoothen wrinkles commonly referred to as smoker’s lines. Belotero’s unique HA formula allows for the treatment of delicate lines and wrinkles, such as the lines around the pucker. The results from Belotero can be seen immediately and will reduce signs of aging around your lips.

Cosmetic fillers are constantly evolving and increasing in their uses as medical technology continues to advance. Our NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, NY Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and staff at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC welcome any questions you may have about the uses for dermal fillers. Contact our office at 212.988.1800, or request an appointment online today for your personal consultation!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Life After Cancer

POSTED ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 06, 2014 AT 5:55 PM by Dr. Elie Levine

Most of us have been affected in some way by breast cancer, either knowing someone afflicted, being a caregiver, or experiencing the illness ourselves. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to remembering those who courageously fought breast cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. One out of eight women will develop some form of the disease in their lifetime, experiencing both physical and emotional distress. But what happens after breast cancer treatment? Many women are left with asymmetric breasts, or will lose one or both breasts while fighting for their lives. Often times, women will actually request to have the cancer-free breast removed in the hopes of avoiding future cancer scares. Today, with more medical insurance companies covering the procedure and advancements in surgical techniques, breast reconstruction after cancer is becoming a common step in the recovery, helping to improve quality of life and regain a sense of self and survivor confidence. So what does a breast cancer survivor need to know about breast reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction allows you to balance the appearance of your chest after a mastectomy, giving your breasts a more shapely appearance without the use of clothing alone. Plastic surgeons performing breast reconstruction usually offer two techniques, a flap procedure using natural tissue extracted from another area of the body or breast implants. The flap procedure gives breasts a natural appearance and is a great option for many patients. However, the flap technique is a more extensive procedure with a prolonged recovery time and is not for everyone. Whichever procedure you choose, Dr. Elie Levine will work with you to help restore the appearance of your breast, improving the appearance and your quality of life post-mastectomy.

It’s important to know that breast reconstruction will not reduce the risk of breast cancer reoccurrence, but neither will breast implant nor flap procedures increase your risk of cancer regrowth. These procedures will not interfere if future treatments are needed. Our NYC plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine and Dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, welcome any questions you may have regarding breast reconstruction surgery. Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC will help guide you through the steps during this procedure. Please call our New York office at 212-988-1800, or request an appointment online for a personal consultation.

Reverse Sun Damage With A Photofacial

POSTED ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2014 AT 11:01 AM by Dr. Jody Levine

You thought you protected yourself when basking in the sun. But now that summer has concluded, your skin is left with damage from the powerful rays. These sunspots can compromise your appearance, adding unwanted blemishes and age to your face. Although you may have tried lotions and creams to combat these blotches, sometimes a stronger treatment is needed. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, our dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, and her staff offer Broadband light (BBL) photofacials, a gentle, non-invasive procedure that removes not only sun spots,  but also age spots, acne, rosacea, lesions, and freckles. It can be performed to the face, chest, arms, back, legs and any area of skin with sun damage or other unwanted pigment. Post-procedure

Broadband light photofacials work by heating the upper layers of skin, stimulating skin cells to create new collagen.  This short procedure (only 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated) requires virtually no downtime. It can be performed to the face, chest, arms, back, legs and any area of skin with sun damage or other unwanted pigment. Post-procedure, you may experience slight, short-lived redness and slight darkening of the treated areas, followed by fading and flaking. Although BBL photofacials require no downtime, our dermatologist recommends avoiding direct sunlight post-treatment. Your treated skin will appear younger and smoother, leading to less noticeable fine lines and wrinkles as well as the complete removal of blemishes caused by the sun, acne, aging, or rosacea.   BBL photofacials usually require more than one treatment to deliver optimal results. Results can be maintained by arranging for a maintenance schedule that will be determined by your age and skin health.

Combat spots left behind on your skin from the summer’s sun with a BBL photofacial! Dr. Jody Levine and her staff will be happy to meet with you to discuss any questions you may have about BBL photofacial in New York. Please call our New York office at 212-988-1800, or request an appointment online for a personal consultation.
