Scar Revision Surgery For Clearer Skin

A scar, no matter how big or the location, can be a daunting blemish on your skin. It can remind you of a traumatic experience, raise questions from others, and have a lasting effect on your self-esteem. Although scars can be caused by various occurrences, including skin conditions, surgical incisions, injuries, burns, or major trauma, they all incur similar aesthetic concerns that you may want reduced or eliminated if you’re embarrassed or self-conscious about your scar. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, our plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, can custom design a treatment plan for your scar revision needs, helping to reduce the appearance of your scar.

Treatment plans to address your scar will be determined during your personal consultation. Some treatments that may be considered include:

  • Mechanical Scar Massage: Can aid in flattening scars.
  • Topical Agents: Topical silicone sheets and gels can improve the appearance of scars. Some agents can reduce the appearance of small scars with minor discoloration or texture impurities.
  • Steroid Injections: Decrease the appearance of raised scar tissue and eliminate discomfort.
  • Laser Treatments For Color: Laser light therapy can improve the color of scars.
  • Laser Skin Resurfacing: This treatment reduces scar tissue and creates a smoother texture by stimulating growth of new skin cells.
  • Surgery: Repositioning the scar can decrease discomfort, contracture, and increase mobility.
  • Dermal Fillers: Fillers have the ability to fill in depressions and smooth areas of concern, making scars less noticeable.

Improve the appearance of your scar with an individualized treatment plan created by our dermatologist and plastic surgeon. We welcome any questions you may have about scar revision at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC. Keep Your Skin Looking Soft & Refreshed All Summer

POSTED ON MONDAY, AUGUST 25, 2014 AT 4:21 PM by Dr. Jody Levine

The summer can be rough on your skin. As the season progresses, you may notice new wrinkles on your skin, caused by increased heat or sun exposure and environmental factors such as poisonous plants, bugs, and even jellyfish. Oftentimes, steps can be taken at-home to correct these skin blemishes, but sometimes, you may need to make an appointment with your dermatologist to correct skin blemishes. NYC Dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC has tips to correct summer skin care woes at-home and in-office.

Dry Skin
Surprisingly, excessive swimming has the ability to dry out your skin, leaving it raw and cracked. Soaking up the warm bubbles of a hot tub can also eliminate your skin’s natural oils, resulting in dull, dry skin. By applying a ceramide moisturizer, you can treat severely dried or cracked skin. Ceramide is a natural occurring molecule, known as a lipid, found in the skin’s surface structure. Dry or cracked skin is often a result of low ceramide levels. By using a simple ceramide moisturizer, you’re treating dryness at the source, not just temporarily relieving symptoms by applying moisture.  At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we offer a specially formulated Antioxidant Total Body Moisturizer, available at our practice. This daily-use, hypoallergenic body cream contains ceramides and green tea to moisturize your skin without the added perfumes and pigments some common, store-bought formulas may contain, leaving your skin smooth and healthy.

Wrinkles
The warm, summer sun can have a severe impact on your skin, causing facial wrinkles and premature aging. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we offer the SkinTyte laser, a deep heating laser that stimulates the production of collagen, coagulating soft tissue, and reversing loose, thin, or sagging skin. The SkinTyte laser has the ability to tighten skin on the face and neck, eliminating sagging jowls and wrinkles.

Skin Irritations
Unfortunately, summertime leaves many opportunities for a discomforting itch. Bug bites, poison ivy, and jellyfish stings create bumps, lumps, and welts that can be an eye sore and a nuisance. With some care tips from Dr. Levine, usually these summer itches can be scratched from home:

Bug Bites: Mosquito bites are hard to avoid over the summer. To minimize the itch from the bite, wash the bite with soap and water right after it occurs. Applying calamine lotion and ice can also alleviate the itch. If the bite remains severely enflamed, or becomes infected, seek medical attention.

Poison Ivy: Over the counter Hydrocoristine and Benadryl can help relieve your itch. Applying cool compresses and taking short, lukewarm baths can help as well. If the rash begins to cover your body, or you’re experiencing blistering with no relief, you must contact your doctor.

Jellyfish Sting: The American Red Cross recommends rinsing an area affected by a jellyfish sting with vinegar or baking soda, helping to deactivate stinging cells, then soaking the area in hot water for at least 20 minutes. In areas in the Pacific Ocean, however, jellyfish stings may be more serious and require immediate medical attention. The affected party should also seek medical assistance for a sting if it covers a large portion of the body, affects the face or genitals, or causes hives or a rapid heartbeat.

Dr. Levine stresses the importance of consulting a medical professional if these skin irritations increase in severity.
