What’s your 2014 beauty resolution? For many, meeting the goal of a more confident, beautiful appearance tops the list of goals for the New Year, but before you go in for your rejuvenated look check out what to know before plastic surgery. Getting to your ideal weight and healthy habits before surgery promotes quick healing and an easier transition to the “new you.” Start out as a healthy patient with these pre and post-operative tips from NY plastic surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine.
Dieting: In some case, patients may follow a strict diet to become candidates for procedures they may not have otherwise qualified for, such as liposuction. No matter what procedure you are planning to undergo however, a healthy diet will help your body prepare for surgery.
Medication: Avoid using medications that carry a risk of bleeding, such as aspirin, Motrin, and Vitamin E. These products should be avoided 2 weeks before surgery and after surgery. Consult with your plastic surgeon for the best advice.
Lifestyle Choices: You may be advised to eliminate alcohol intake prior to your surgery and eliminate caffeine intake.
Dieting: Following surgery, you should drink lots of fluids, preferably water, and eat well. A continued healthy diet will keep your body happy and allow it to take the necessary energy it needs to help you recover.
Medication: Patients should always take pain medication as advised to ensure the fastest recovery. Pain can make your blood pressure go up which leads to increased swelling and bleeding. So, it is important you follow your plastic surgeons instructions.
Lifestyle Choices: Do not smoke and avoid alcohol consumption while taking medications. Smoking delays healing and can lead to complications.
Exercise: While you may be bed-ridden for a day or so following surgery, most procedures will allow you to be up and about. Movement will increase blood flow and encourage faster healing times. In many cases, you will be asked to avoid heavy lifting. Your board certified plastic surgeon will discuss your individual situation with you following surgery.
Follow-up appointments: Be sure attend any follow-up appointments your plastic surgeon recommends to ensure your recovery is running smoothly. He will recommend any further suggestions to speed-up your recovery following plastic surgery.
Your care shouldn’t end when you go home. Our NY plastic surgeon, dermatologist, and staff are dedicated to providing ongoing follow-up care for every patient. We welcome any questions you may have about your surgery and encourage you to ask questions. Contact our office at 212.988.1800, or request an appointment online today for your personal consultation!

Winter weather can take a toll on the supple softness of your skin. Washing, moisturizing, and applying sunscreen to your face should be a part of your daily, morning routine, but during the winter, it’s especially important to remain as hydrated, moisturized, and protected against the sun’s harmful UV rays as you do during the summer. Check out our top three skin care tips to safeguard against the harsh weather this winter!
Moisturize: Remember to moisturize and keep hydrated during the cold winter months! Skin can crack from being exposed to the cold temperature and winter elements, but a barrier repair cream can help chapped & wind-burned skin.
Sun Protection: Use SPF sunscreen all year round! Although temperatures are cold, the sun’s harmful UV rays can damage your skin and increase your risk of cancer. If sunscreen irritates your skin, oil free brands can help keep your pores clear while still protecting your skin during the harsh winter months.
Lips: Pucker up! Your lips are just as important to care for in the winter months as your hands and face! Use a repair cream, such as La Roche-Posay Ceralip, to hydrate severely dry lips. Lips already dried from acne treatment will especially benefit from this cream!
Safeguard against chapped lips and dry skin this winter! Whether you have typically dry or oily skin, acne, or a combination of skin concerns, Dr. Jody Levine can help you develop a skincare routine that meets your individual needs at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC. Dr. Jody Levine and her staff will be happy to meet with you to discuss any questions you may have about winter skin care tips and the skin care products we provide. Age Spot Removal: Turns out genetics aren’t the only culprit of age spots. Most age spots are caused by overexposure to the sun and/or tanning beds. When UV rays attack the skin, the production of melanin accelerates, creating a tan that helps protect the deeper layers of skin from damage. As a result, age spots may appear as melanin becomes clumped or is overly produced.
Using lasers and light based therapies however, dermatologists can break up excess pigmentation, reduce the appearance of age spots, and promote the body’s natural production of collagen. Learn more about age spot removal and ask our NYC dermatologist if laser age spot removal is right for you.
