Breast Reconstruction Options Post-Mastectomy

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we would like to acknowledge the millions of women bravely fighting this disease. For many breast cancer patients, treatment can bring about substantial physical changes—especially for those who have underwent a mastectomy or double mastectomy. Breast reconstruction is an important part of the recovery process for many breast cancer patients and can help restore a sense of self after undergoing a mastectomy. Thanks to technological advancements, there are now numerous surgical options available to help reconstruct the breasts post-mastectomy, including breast implants, fat grafting, and tissue flap surgery. When choosing which form of breast reconstruction is right for you, your plastic surgeon can work closely with you to determine the best treatment option. In many cases, a combination procedure may be recommended to achieve an optimal result. Symmetry procedures on the other side may be of benefit in patients with one-sided breast cancer. Options include lift, augmentation, reduction, or fat transfer to achieve better symmetry. Learn more about these breast reconstruction techniques below.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is designed to add natural-looking size and shape to the breasts. When undergoing breast reconstruction, patients can opt for breast implants, natural breast augmentation using fat grafting, or tissue flap surgery, depending on their treatment goals.

Breast implants are specially made to complement your body type. Implants are available in different sizes, as well as shapes (round and teardrop) to fit the body size of each patient.

Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, can complement breast implants by volumizing the surrounding areas using your body’s natural fat cells. These fat cells are first taken from a donor location (usually the thighs, flanks, or abdomen) using liposuction. After being collected, your natural fat is then injected into the breasts to add shape and smooth asymmetries.

During tissue flap surgery, skin, muscle, and fat are taken from the back or abdomen and used to reconstruct the breasts. Since this method uses your body’s own skin and muscle, tissue flap surgery can achieve realistic-looking results.

Breast Lift Surgery

Breast lift surgery can yield substantial results and is often combined with the above breast augmentation or fat grafting techniques for those who have underwent a mastectomy or double mastectomy. During a breast lift, the breasts are raised to a more youthful position and breast tissue is carefully redraped or removed, if necessary, to achieve natural-looking contours.
