The summer can be rough on your skin. As the season progresses, you may notice new wrinkles on your skin, caused by increased heat or sun exposure and environmental factors such as poisonous plants, bugs, and even jellyfish. Oftentimes, steps can be taken at-home to correct these skin blemishes, but sometimes, you may need to make an appointment with your dermatologist to correct skin blemishes. NYC Dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, at Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC has tips to correct summer skin care woes at-home and in-office.
Surprisingly, excessive swimming has the ability to dry out your skin, leaving it raw and cracked. Soaking up the warm bubbles of a hot tub can also eliminate your skin’s natural oils, resulting in dull, dry skin. By applying a ceramide moisturizer, you can treat severely dried or cracked skin. Ceramide is a natural occurring molecule, known as a lipid, found in the skin’s surface structure. Dry or cracked skin is often a result of low ceramide levels. By using a simple ceramide moisturizer, you’re treating dryness at the source, not just temporarily relieving symptoms by applying moisture. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we offer a specially formulated Antioxidant Total Body Moisturizer, available at our practice. This daily-use, hypoallergenic body cream contains ceramides and green tea to moisturize your skin without the added perfumes and pigments some common, store-bought formulas may contain, leaving your skin smooth and healthy.
The warm, summer sun can have a severe impact on your skin, causing facial wrinkles and premature aging. At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we offer the SkinTyte laser, a deep heating laser that stimulates the production of collagen, coagulating soft tissue, and reversing loose, thin, or sagging skin. The SkinTyte laser has the ability to tighten skin on the face and neck, eliminating sagging jowls and wrinkles.
Unfortunately, summertime leaves many opportunities for a discomforting itch. Bug bites, poison ivy, and jellyfish stings create bumps, lumps, and welts that can be an eye sore and a nuisance. With some care tips from Dr. Levine, usually these summer itches can be scratched from home:
Bug Bites: Mosquito bites are hard to avoid over the summer. To minimize the itch from the bite, wash the bite with soap and water right after it occurs. Applying calamine lotion and ice can also alleviate the itch. If the bite remains severely enflamed, or becomes infected, seek medical attention.
Poison Ivy: Over the counter Hydrocoristine and Benadryl can help relieve your itch. Applying cool compresses and taking short, lukewarm baths can help as well. If the rash begins to cover your body, or you’re experiencing blistering with no relief, you must contact your doctor.
Jellyfish Sting: The American Red Cross recommends rinsing an area affected by a jellyfish sting with vinegar or baking soda, helping to deactivate stinging cells, then soaking the area in hot water for at least 20 minutes. In areas in the Pacific Ocean, however, jellyfish stings may be more serious and require immediate medical attention. The affected party should also seek medical assistance for a sting if it covers a large portion of the body, affects the face or genitals, or causes hives or a rapid heartbeat.
Dr. Levine stresses the importance of consulting a medical professional if these skin irritations increase in severity.

Summer is in full swing! Although the warm, summer sun baking on your body is a welcomed part of the season, it may be having some unwelcoming affects, such as revealing excessive sweating and unwanted hair growth usually covered by garments. Our NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, offers minimally invasive procedures to eliminate sweating and remove unwanted hair growth. These procedures are a solution to help you look and feel better for summer!
Botox for Hyperhidrosis
Hyperhidrosis, commonly referred to as excessive sweating, can affect your underarms, the palms of your hands, and the soles of your feet. Not only is excessive sweating embarrassing, it can also cause rashes, stain clothing, and make social gatherings a stressful occurrence. Although you may sweat most of the time, the summer season brings warmer weather, increasing the occurrences and intensity of sweating. Our dermatologist, Dr. Levine, performs Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis. This natural, purified protein is injected into affected areas. Botox blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands and thereby stops the production of sweat. The procedure is outpatient, lasting only twenty minutes and requires zero downtime. The treatment will initially need to be repeated a few times a year, but within time, the frequency of treatments will decrease.
Laser Hair Removal
Shaving, plucking, and waxing are common methods of hair removal that are time consuming, ineffective, and leave your skin feeling soft for only a short period of time. Using a laser-emitted, pulsated light, laser hair removal is able to absorb the pigment in the hair, transmitted all the way down to the root. The heat produced by the laser damages the unwanted hair follicle, inhibiting future hair growth. Laser hair removal is often used by women to decrease hair growth in the legs, armpits, face, and bikini line, allowing for a more flawless appearance and eliminating ingrowns. Laser hair removal is virtually painless, with the laser treatment described as a “pin prick” or “prickling”. Results from laser hair removal vary, and a series of multiple treatments are required to achieve long lasting results.
We can help you look and feel more confident for summer with minimally invasive laser hair removal in NYC and Botox Hyperhidrosis treatment! Our NYC dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, NY Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Elie Levine, and staff at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC welcome any questions you may have about these treatments.
