Looking to achieve youthful skin this new year? One commonly-requested treatment among patients is the reduction of troublesome varicose and spider veins. These bulging veins affect a large number of both men and women. Many factors, including age, sun exposure, and hormonal fluxes, may result in the appearance of large, twisting vein patterns underneath the skin. In addition to being unsightly, varicose and spider veins can also affect self-confidence, causing patients to cover up their arms and legs instead of flaunting their complexion. Hiding beneath layers of clothes comes with ease during the cold winter months, however, as many patients find their wardrobes limited. Numerous vein treatments are available to produce long-lasting results in time for spring! Undergoing vein treatment during the winter can lead to smoother-looking skin by the time the weather gets warmer. If you’re suffering from unsightly, bulging veins, New York dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine of Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC offers various solutions, including laser vein treatment and sclerotherapy, to eliminate both spider veins and varicose veins for radiant skin!
What Causes Varicose Veins & Spider Veins?
Varicose and spider veins may be caused by a number of factors. Aging and genetics are prominent causes for many patients, while obesity, over-exposure to the sun, and a sedentary lifestyle also contribute to bulging veins. Additionally, hormonal shifts during pregnancy or menopause may play a part in the formation of vein patterns. Our vein treatments are designed to reverse the effects of these troublesome factors and improve the appearance of skin.
Where Do Spider & Varicose Veins Form?
The most common treatment areas for spider and varicose veins are the upper and lower legs. These vein clusters can also form around the face, hands, and arms, depending on the patient. Laser vein treatment and sclerotherapy are designed reduce bulging veins around all of these areas.
Eliminate Unsightly Veins With Laser Treatments!
Laser vein treatment incorporates advanced laser technology to break apart varicose veins and spider veins. During your procedure, laser energy is directed through the skin and delivered to the vein(s) underneath. Heat from the laser results in the gradual closing and disappearance of veins, as the body absorbs the targeted veins over time. Patients can resume their daily activities immediately following their laser vein treatment.
Sclerotherapy To Dissolve Veins!
Sclerotherapy uses a specialized solution to collapse bulging veins. The sclerosing agent is carefully injected into the targeted vein(s) in as little as 15 minutes. This solution causes the vein(s) to close up. Over time, the targeted veins begin to disappear, as they are absorbed by the body. Patients are given compression tape and support stockings for healing and may begin to see results within a few weeks of undergoing sclerotherapy treatment.

The summer may be over, but that doesn’t mean the sultry sun failed to leave its mark. Symptoms of sun damage, such as redness and uneven pigmentation, are often undesirable after-effects of a summer well spent. Though the face is most equated with sun damage, your entire body is prone to the effects of ultraviolet rays. Repeated exposure to the sun can break down collagen—causing fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven pigmentation. Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC offers different laser and light-based therapies that are designed to improve skin tone and keep skin looking rejuvenated!
Laser skin resurfacing treats sun damage with revolutionary laser technology! Utilizing the PicoSure® Laser, this procedure delivers precise bursts of energy to the affected area without damaging surrounding skin cells. The PicoSure® Laser resurfaces your skin, allowing fresh skin cells to grow—improving skin texture and pigmentation. The laser’s energy also stimulates collagen production below the surface of your skin; this new collagen provides firmness and elasticity to round out your smooth new look. Laser skin resurfacing can be performed on multiple areas of the body as well, including the face, chest, arms, hands, and legs, among others.
Light therapies can also be utilized to treat the medical effects of sun damage—and not only the cosmetic effects. Photodynamic therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses a photosensitizing topical medication and a light to target certain skin cells that show signs of damage. First, a photosensitizing solution is applied to the area of uneven pigmentation. The solution is absorbed by damaged skin cells being targeted. The area is then exposed to light, which activates the photosensitizing solution and destroys the precancerous or cancerous sun-damaged cells. The majority of patients require 1 treatment, with annual touch-ups as needed. Patients are required to avoid sun exposure for 48 hours after undergoing photodynamic therapy.
BroadBand Light photorejuvenation (BBL) delivers powerful pulses of broadband light energy to sun-damaged skin. This energy breaks up excess pigments to create smooth, even skin tone. Additionally, heat pulses from BBL photorejuvenation encourage normal collagen production for continuing results in the months following BBL treatment.

Are sun spots and unflattering tattoos making you shy away from summer snapshots? Thanks to advancements in laser technology, there are a variety of safe and effective ways to reduce unwanted pigments and tattoos!
Here at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC, dermatologist Dr. Jody Levine offers various laser treatments, including the PicoSure® laser—a breakthrough innovation in laser tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation.
The PicoSure® laser treats pigments faster than ever, thanks to picosecond technology that delivers approximately one trillion pulses of energy per second. Treatment is further enhanced by an adjustable pressure modulator—known as the Boost—which can magnify the pressure of the PicoSure®'s laser bursts and shorten the laser’s pulse to improve skin pigmentation. Once these particles are reduced, they can be easily absorbed by the body and removed from view.
The precision of the PicoSure® laser allows for less treatment time during your laser tattoo removal session with fewer overall treatments required. The PicoSure® laser can acheive fast results with less downtime than lasers that use nanonsecond technology. Many patients undergo anywhere from 3-8 treatments and see a tattoo reduction of up to 95%, though individual results vary from patient to patient. Dr. Levine will discuss your personalized treatment plan, as well as your desired results.
Benefits Of Using The Picosure® Laser For Tattoo Removal:
Faster, more efficient laser pulses
Reduced appearance of ink on skin
Fewer treatments and less overall treatment time per session
Less downtime than with nanosecond technology-based lasers

This allows for personalized and more efficient care.

It’s finally summertime! That means gorgeous weather and plenty of time outdoors. However, summer also brings a host of skin care challenges. The summer sun can cause damage to your skin if you’re not prepared. Did you know you’re at an increased risk of breakouts—with acne triggering from some unexpected sources? At Plastic Surgery and Dermatology of NYC, we can help you keep your skin fresh while you beat the heat!
The Oil-Free Key To Healthy Skin!
In the heat of the summer, your skin doesn’t need a thick coat of heavy moisturizer to stay hydrated. Our New York dermatologist, Dr. Jody Levine, recommends applying a light, oil-free moisturizer to lock in moisture and avoid dryness and peeling. Even better, these light moisturizers can fight dryness from cholorine and many have an SPF to protect against sunburn.
Shield Yourself From The Sun’s Rays!
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! While the sun poses a threat to your skin year-round, the summer sun can be extremely damaging—especially its ultraviolet rays. The key to preventing sun damage is reapplying sunscreen multiple times a day. All too often, we are guilty of applying sunscreen in the morning and then heading out for a summer day. Unfortunately, sunscreen only lasts about 2 hours. Dr. Levine recommends to reapply sunscreen generously throughout your day, no matter the weather conditions. You are still at risk even on a cloudy day! UV rays can also penetrate office windows and car windshields, so make sure to lather up before leaving for work.
Acne Triggers From The Unlikliest of Places!
You may never have considered your sunglasses as a potential cause for acne, but did you know that oil from dirty sunglasses can trigger breakouts? As dirt and bacteria build up on your glasses, the areas around your nose, temple, and cheeks are more susceptible to acne. Dr. Levine says to give your sunglasses a quick cleaning every time before use to reduce breakouts!
