Hair Transplant Treatment

Target Hair Loss with Hair Transplant in New York

A thick, full head of healthy hair is often seen as the hallmark of youth and vitality in men.  Hair loss can be particularly troubling because it often affects self-esteem, making men feel older, less attractive, and less confident.   While hair loss is common in men, it can also affect women, causing similar feelings of low self-esteem.  At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, we can tap into the combined expertise of both Dr. Jody Levine and Dr. Elie Levine to help determine the cause of, and the best treatment options for, your hair loss.  Hair loss is most often caused by genetic factors, but can also be brought about by hormonal imbalances.  Medical treatment may be recommended in cases of hormonal imbalance.  Some people may respond well to topical treatments, such as Minoxidil, or oral treatments, such as Propecia.  But for those looking for a longer-lasting solution, hair transplant treatment may be the best option.
In the past, hair transplant techniques were limited, and the results were usually disappointing.  Old-fashioned methods transplanted many hair follicles at once, resulting in rows of hair plugs that looked too organized and symmetrical.  In other words, it looked unnatural.  But today’s advanced transplant methods are both more successful and more artistic.  By carefully separating out and then transplanting single or double follicular units in a naturally random pattern, we can produce outstanding, long-lasting, and completely natural-looking results.*

How is hair transplant treatment performed?

During the hair transplant procedure, hair follicles are removed from the back of the head or from another donor site with extra hair.  Dr. Levine meticulously separates the hair from the donor strip into single and double follicular units, which are then transplanted in a natural pattern in the recipient sites.  The transplanted hair is held in place by surrounding tissue; no stitches are necessary.  Local anesthetic is used to ensure patient comfort.  The procedure may take up to 5 hours, but the patient is awake throughout, and able to read, watch TV, work, or relax during treatment.*

When will I see results from hair transplant treatment?

Hair will re-grow naturally over time after hair transplant treatment.  The initial transplanted hairs may fall out 1-2 weeks after your procedure. This is natural and expected.  The important thing to remember is that only the external hair is falling out at this time; the key component of the transplanted follicle remains in the scalp.  New hairs will begin to grow after about 6-8 weeks, and you will see the full effects approximately 6 months after your procedure.*

Are the results long-lasting?

Yes. Hair transplantation improves your hairline for long-lasting results. Your transplanted hair is simply your hair moved to a new site.  It will continue to grow, and may be cut, dyed, and cared for just the same as the rest of your hair.*

How can I prepare for hair transplant treatment?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Jody Levine and Dr. Elie Levine will examine your hair and determine the cause of your hair loss.  They will thoroughly discuss your goals and expectations, including possible risks and the best way to prepare for your treatment.  They will let you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure, and they will answer any questions that you may have.

What type of anesthesia will be used?

Local anesthesia is used for hair transplant treatment.

What should I expect during hair transplant treatment?

Hair transplant treatment is performed on an outpatient basis in our state-of-the-art, in-office operating suite, which is accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF).  The length of your procedure will depend on many factors, but on average, the treatment usually takes about 5 hours.*  After your procedure, you will wake be taken to our warm and caring recovery suite, where our licensed, registered nurse will make sure you are comfortable and assist in your recovery.  You will be able to go home the same day with a friend or family member.

What can I expect after hair transplant treatment?

Every surgery is different, and you will receive detailed post-operative instructions for your specific needs.  Most patients report only mild discomfort after hair transplant treatment.  Topical antibacterial ointments will aid in healing at the donor and recipient sites.  You will be able to shower the following day, and lightly shampoo 2 days after your procedure.*  At Plastic Surgery & Dermatology of NYC, our concern for you doesn’t end when you go home.  We’re dedicated to providing ongoing care to ensure a fast, safe, and smooth recovery.  Dr. Levine will see you for post-operative visits and will answer any questions you may have about your recovery, as well as your overall health and well-being.
